Blogging's fallen by the wayside this week, as sometimes it will.
I have much doings to relate in an abbreviated manner, but not any significant news just now.
For example, in the bullet proof category, I put new kevlar tires on Sheldon Bike and am thusfar flat-free. My car got a flat though (I haven't driven it in over a month) with the result that I was late to a party for our new Public Defender, Carlos Martinez, and then late again to a book-reading in the Gables. I did get to meet some good people that evening, including some FIU professors.
What else? I went to a birthday party, saw some pelicans, sat with my feet in the water and relaxed, ate junk food, blew bubbles, smoked a cigar, got dinner made for me, made dinner for others, went to the library, cleaned the apartment, rode Sheldon Bike about, and took care of various sundries.
The new courtroom's going well - even though I'm already bored cataloging the private attorneys' wardrobes. I wish I could so some of my motions practice instead of just sitting in court, waiting to see if I'm appointed on anything. I do a lot of sitting in the new courtroom, alas, and it's not like I don't have tons of work to take care of (I do, believe me, I do). I think I'm still adjusting - in some ways my completely overwhelming division was easier in that no thought was required in terms of planning. I just started in the morning, hit whatever the biggest daily crisis was, went down the list, and stopped when I couldn't go any further. I'm good at that. Start-Stop-Start requires a different kind of readiness.
I did go back to my old division and cover for an afternoon so my former trial partners could get ready for trial (they got a NG on a sweet case I'd loved to have taken). It was a good afternoon in that I had a minor victory in the form of getting one of my old client's released. He, not bullet proof, was shot (twice) by the police in a resisting-without-violence scenario about two years ago. For various reasons the case dragged on and he found himself in jail again. The prosecutor was claiming there was no "victim" contact and was thus objecting to his release. I got to stand up and say that there was plenty of contact here - contact in the form of two bullets in my client's abdomen. The judge was inclined to let my client go when, unfortunately, my (nervous) client started talking. I'd relate the whole conversation but that'd be problematic; suffice to say my client made a decent go at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. However, the final exchange with the judge (in good humor on both parts) resulted in my client dodging a metaphorical bullet and getting released.
I am also sitting on 4 pieces of large news, all of which are categorically unblogable, due to the persons involved. Two are personal and two are professional. The biggest one is pretty damn big, in the sense that friends and I are trying to figure out what the NY Times will make of it. I think that's as loose as my lips should get right now, but I'm feeling that racehorse-in-the-gate energy whenever I think about it.
So - back to the grind for now.
Is now available at
News, but no news? I do hope you'll AT LEAST post a link to the NYTimes when your item of interest goes up.
All that Miami life is sounding nice--especially the sitting with feet in the water. It sounds like you're adjusting well.
my Best--
